Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso has been inducted as the 10th Vice Chancellor of the Kwame University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with a call to him to work with passion to achieve excellence in science and technology education.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene and Chancellor, said it was important for everybody to recognize that the world, today, had become technologically-driven.
That was why the vast and experienced human resource at the disposal of the university should be taken advantage of to embark on cutting-edge research, the outcomes would help in addressing the development challenges of the nation.
Prof. Obiri-Danso, a leading academician, has considerable experience in institutional and research management, university teaching, international relations and outreach services delivery.
A professor of environmental microbiology and health, he has conducted extensive studies on anti-biotic drug use, monitoring and evaluation of resistance in humans, animals, food, water and vegetables.
His academic career with the KNUST began about three decades ago - rising through the hierarchy position of teaching and research assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor to the full status as professor.
He takes over from Prof. William Otoo Ellis, who had served out his six-year term.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu underlined the need for the university authorities to fashion out innovative products and programmes to boost its internally-generated funds.
With the decline in government' subvention, he indicated that, it was in the KNUST's own interest to find alternative means of bringing in more revenue for its operation.
'Now is the time not to be complacent, but work with commitment in managing our resources to help maintain the University's status as a Centre of Excellence', the Asantehene added.
Prof. Ellis assured his successor that the University community would united behind him to achieve his goals.
The new Vice Chancellor, promised an open-door and all-inclusive policy for the advancement of quality science and technology education.
