Mesut Ozil insists Arsenal was always his first choice destination when he decided to leave Real Madrid.

The 28-year-old has arguably hit the form of his life under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger this season and hopes to inspire a title challenge.

The World Cup winner cost the Gunners £42.5million three years ago and insists he was inspired to follow former greats such as Thierry Henry.

"I spoke with Wenger and he wanted me at Arsenal. I said 'if I get the opportunity to change clubs, you'll be the first [choice]'," Ozil told Arsenal's official YouTube channel.

"So we spoke and I decided to come. I remember [Thierry] Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires - such great players - and I wanted to be a part of them.

"My first and second year we won the FA Cup. I really enjoy playing for such a big club like Arsenal."

Ozil is enjoying a newfound streak in front of goal and is already one away from his best-ever total of eight goals in all competitions, which the Gunners faithful hope will be the difference this season in the title race.
